The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is responsible for the development, promotion and evaluation of Best Management Practices (BMPs) for pesticide use.

Best Management Practices (BMPs)

The MDA has adopted BMPs to address agricultural chemical use and environmental protection. The BMPs include mandatory label requirements and a series of optional voluntary practices. Together, these practices reduce contamination of water resources, mitigate off-target impacts and guide chemical use while considering the specific needs of farming operations.

Herbicide BMPs: BMPs for all agricultural herbicides and for the specific herbicides acetochlor, alachlor, atrazine, metolachlor and metribuzin are available. Educational posters are also available.

Insecticide BMPs: BMPs specific for chlorpyrifos and for all agricultural insecticides (PDF) are available.

Potato Fungicide BMPs: BMPs to prevent drift and minimize volatilization of potato fungicides (PDF) are available.

BMPs for Pesticide Management and Handling

These BMPs outline responsible and effective procedures for pesticide use and handling that can help protect our environment, our water supplies - and ourselves.
