Atrazine Products and Standpipe Setback Language

Atrazine products differ in the label language they use to describe application setback requirements for tile-outletted fields with standpipes. When labels were reviewed in 2009, approximately 70 percent of atrazine products referenced “terraced fields” on their labels and 30 percent did not.

When “terraced fields” are referenced on the label, the application restrictions only apply to standpipes in fields that are terraced. If “terraced fields” are not referenced, the application restrictions apply to all standpipes, whether they are in fields that are terraced or not.

The MDA interprets references to “standpipes” on atrazine labels to include all surface tile inlets, including open inlets, slotted riser pipes, and rock inlets.

Tile-Outletted Terraced Fields Containing Standpipes

One of the following restrictions must be used in applying atrazine to tile-terraced fields containing standpipes:

1. Do not apply this product within 66 feet of standpipes in tile-outletted terraced fields.
2. Apply this product to the entire tile-outletted terraced field and immediately incorporate it to a depth of two to three inches in the entire field.
3. Apply this product to the entire tile-outletted terraced field under a no-till practice only when a high crop residue management practice is practiced. High crop residue management is described as a crop management practice where little or no crop residue is removed from the field during and after crop harvest.

Tile-Outletted Fields Containing Standpipes

One of the following restrictions must be used in applying this product to tile-outletted fields containing standpipes:

1. Do not apply this product within 66 feet of standpipes in tile-outletted fields.
2. Apply this product to the entire tile-outletted field and immediately incorporate it to a depth of two to three inches in the entire tile-outletted field.
3. Apply this product to the entire tile-outletted field under a no-till practice only when high crop residue management practices are used. Best Management Practices

Voluntary Water Quality Best Management Practices (BMPs) developed by the MDA for atrazine recommends that application setbacks and vegetated buffers be adopted around all surface tile inlets, whether they are in fields which are terraced or not.
